Instead, our attention is directed at the interiors of the chimpanzee's emotional life and we're expected to find, in that animal's inner turbulence, meaning in the chaos he eventually wreaks. This is supposed to be a вЂњPlanet of the ApesвЂќ movie, after all, and what the audience wants is for amazing things to happen and for it all to mean something in the end. (Even worse, a motion-capture chimpanzee, played by Andy Serkis.) The chimp's existential angst and emerging love for his people become the story's focus. Indeed, if Franco ever runs for president, this is his вЂњBedtime for Bonzo,вЂќ because here he is playing second fiddle to a chimpanzee. He plays a guy who feels a lot and cares a lot but more or less just stands around. Now, if you just read that last sentence with attention, you already know one big problem with this movie.

The rest of the movie concerns the challenges facing a chimp caught between two worlds, too much of an ape to fit in with people, and too smart to spend his life eating bananas and scratching himself. After his findings are unfairly discredited, he brings a baby chimp home and raises it as his pet/son. Instead it has one: James Franco, looking only slightly less stoned than he did at the Oscars, plays a brilliant medical researcher who develops an Alzheimer's drug that he is testing on chimpanzees, and oh boy, are those chimps getting intelligent. вЂњRiseвЂќ needed two or three great plot ideas. It is not what could be fairly called a bad movie, but neither is it fine enough to be a good one, with its line-up of dull characters and a limp story.

If it lasts 40 days in theaters, that would be amazing. Nothing in вЂњRise of the Planet of the ApesвЂќ will last 40 years.
